Deliver us, Lord, from every evil,

and grant us peace in our day.

In your mercy keep us free from sin

and protect us from all anxiety

as we await in joyful hope

for the coming of our Savior,

Jesus Christ.

Remember the Robert Frost poem about the road less traveled, how he stood and pondered which path to follow? Well, my story is the opposite. It's about traveling on two different paths simultaneously (one professional and one spiritual) and then having them converge into one, able to walk them both in the same space and time!

I've been a Licensed Professional Counselor for about 30 years, and the focus of my practice has been gradually settled on clearing trauma and disturbing memories, and stress, anxiety, and depression. With the aid of neuroscience (and medication therapy) we've made great progress in learning how to quiet the brain and help individuals live with greater peace. That is the work I'm passionate about.

Meditation is a mindfulness-based practice that has received great attention in the field of mental health for several decades, (thanks to the Beatles' sessions with the Maharishi Mahesh Yogi in India!) I tried meditation half-heartedly on several occasions, but the other half of my heart wasn't having it. I thought, surely there has to be a Christian or Catholic equivalent of meditation. And there was...is! It's called Centering Prayer, and as I learned more about it and practiced it myself I discovered, to my almost disbelief, that in God's wonderful plan for Creation, he has given us this prayer, this tool, to help our mind's heal (from trauma, from bullying, from abuse, from our own negative thoughts) in the same way our bodies can heal a cut, a broken bone, or fight off a virus.

During this workshop/worship I will share with you some of the simple exercises I use with my clients to clear stress and anxiety, and disturbing memories. And I will also present a primer on Centering Prayer for anyone who is interested in experiencing this ancient form of prayer, loved by the mystics and Church mothers and fathers. Come and see.

This day will offer prayer, input, quiet reflection, and faith sharing on walking this path of Mercy in our day and time, where we live and work. As 21st century disciples of Jesus the Christ, our model of Mercy, how do we walk this path with all those whom we encounter, accompanying them in their joys and sorrows, in their needs and hopes, as together we journey towards God? How do we live the works of Mercy in the 21st century? Together we will explore making Mercy real in our lives!
